Used Oil Filter Draining & Disposal
According to federal regulations, used oil must be properly removed from an oil filter prior to disposal. Used oil filters must be hot drained using one of four distinct methods. The two methods
listed below are the most commonly used and practical for most repair shops:
Puncturing and Draining
- The filter must be punctured with a screwdriver or punch that will allow air to evacuate the remaining oil. Hot-draining means draining the oil at near engine temperature. The filter must be placed gasket side down in a drain pan and left to drain for 12-24 hours.
Crushing
- The filter is crushed by a mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic device squeezing out the remaining oil and compacting the remaining filter materials.
